Photokeratitis is a painful condition associated with intense ultraviolet exposure — for example from snow, water, high altitude or welding arcs without protection. It is sometimes described as a sunburn of the eye's surface.

Reducing UV exposure

  • Wear sunglasses labelled 100% UVA/UVB or UV400.
  • Choose wraparound or larger styles in snow and on water.
  • Use proper protective equipment for welding and tanning beds.
