Lens choices affect how your glasses look, feel and perform. Work through three decisions: vision type, lens material (index) and coatings.
1. Vision type
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| Single vision | One prescription across the whole lens — for distance or for reading. |
| Progressive | A gradual change from distance at the top to near at the bottom, with no visible line. |
| Bifocal | Two distinct zones separated by a visible line. |
| Reading | Magnification for close work only. |
| Non-prescription | Plano lenses with no correction — for fashion or sun protection. |
2. Lens index
Higher-index materials bend light more efficiently, so lenses can be thinner for stronger prescriptions. Read more in our lens index guide.
3. Coatings and treatments
- Anti-reflective coating reduces reflections.
- Blue-light filtering filters part of the blue-violet spectrum.
- Photochromic lenses darken outdoors.
- Sun tints and polarization are available on sunglasses.
